Surf Proud – Sharing The Joy of Surfing on Queensland's Sunshine Coast

Written by Lydia Burdett /

Surf Proud is a safe space for the LGBTQIA+ surfing community to gather and connect in a healthy environment on the Sunshine Coast. We caught up with its founder, Sez, a passionate surfer who wanted to share their love for the ocean and the sport with others…

How did Surf Proud start – and evolve into how we know it today?

Surf Proud began with a simple idea: to bring people together through the joy of surfing. Initially, it started as a small gathering of friends surfing together, but it quickly grew as more people joined in, attracted by the positive vibes and sense of community. Over the years, Surf Proud evolved into a structured organisation offering surf retreats, lessons, and community events. Today, it stands as a beacon for those looking to improve their surfing skills, connect with like-minded individuals, and experience the physical and mental benefits of surfing in a supportive environment.

What are the impacts on people’s physical and mental health?

Surfing as a group has profound impacts on both physical and mental health. Physically, it provides a full-body workout that enhances cardiovascular fitness, strength, and balance. The act of paddling, standing up, and riding waves engages multiple muscle groups, promoting overall fitness and endurance. Mentally, group surfing fosters a sense of belonging and community. The shared experience of conquering waves and enjoying the ocean’s beauty creates strong social bonds and reduces feelings of isolation. Additionally, being in nature and focusing on the present moment during surfing can reduce stress, anxiety, and depression, contributing to overall mental well-being.

What’s your best advice to encourage people to start surfing?

My best advice is to emphasise the fun and inclusive nature of the sport. Surfing isn’t just about catching waves; it’s about enjoying the ocean, spending time outdoors, and connecting with a community of supportive and enthusiastic individuals. Encourage beginners to take lessons from experienced instructors, who can provide a safe and enjoyable introduction to the sport. Remind them that everyone was a beginner once, and progress comes with practice and persistence. Highlight the physical and mental benefits of surfing, encourage them to embrace the learning process and celebrate small victories along the way.

And your best advice to people who want to set challenges to pursue their own goals?

Start with clear, achievable objectives. Break down larger goals into smaller, manageable steps and set a timeline for each milestone. Stay committed and consistent, even when progress seems slow. Surround yourself with a supportive community that can offer encouragement, advice, and accountability. Embrace a growth mindset, viewing challenges as opportunities to learn and improve rather than obstacles. Celebrate your successes, no matter how small, and use setbacks as learning experiences to fuel your determination. Above all, stay passionate about your goals and enjoy the journey towards achieving them.

Anything else you’d like to share about yourselves and/or the community?
