With hundreds of miles of gorgeous coastline to explore, Cornwall is a paddle boarders paradise. From secluded coves to stunning beaches, there are plenty of places to enjoy stand up paddle boarding in Cornwall, and there’s no time like the present to get out and discover them. In order to help you get started, we’ve picked 6 of our favourite spots to enjoy stand up paddle boarding in Cornwall.
St Michael’s Mount
St Michael’s Mount is a stunning island located in Mount’s Bay, West Cornwall. It’s home to a stunning historic castle, and it’s also one of our absolute favourite spots for stand up paddle boarding in Cornwall. The water rarely gets too rough to paddle making it the perfect location for beginners who are learning to paddle, as well as seasoned pros. You can launch from the beach in Marazion and paddle across to the gorgeous island for some well earned food and drink.
Portreath
The North Cornish coast features some of the most dramatic scenery in the county, and Portreath is no exception to this. Packed full of towering cliffs, remote coves and secluded caves, there’s no shortage of picturesque views. There’s also a high chance that you might bump into some seals and dolphins along the way too! There can sometimes be a swell at Portreath, and so we’d recommend this spot for paddle boarders with a little more experience. One of our favourite adventures is paddling down the coastline to Ralph’s Cupboard which is a huge collapsed sea cave with a beach inside.
Fowey River
If you’re a lover of wildlife then this is definitely one of the places that you need to try stand up paddle boarding in Cornwall. The area is home to an abundance of bird and flower species to look out for on route, whilst the rocky headlands and caves create beautiful views. A great idea for a day out on the water is to pack up a waterproof cool bag, and paddle towards the gorgeous towns of Golant or Lostwithiel.
Porthcurno Beach
Porthcurno is undoubtedly one of the most picturesque spots in Cornwall, known for its turquoise waters, stunning granite cliffs and white sandy beach. With this in mind, it’s probably not surprising to hear that this is one of our top picks for stand up paddle boarding in Cornwall. Launch from the beach at low tide and paddle towards Logan Rock where you’ll discover plenty of secluded coves to pitch up at along the way.
Sennen Cove
Sennen Cove offers a fantastic view of Land’s End, particularly from the water. As an added bonus, it’s also home to a resident seal colony that lives in a secluded sea cave beneath the Land’s End headland. As with other spots, such as Portreath, there can be a strong swell at Sennen and so it’s best to head out on a calmer day.
The River Gannel
Another spot that’s great for paddle boarders of all abilities is the River Gannel that runs from Newquay to Crantock Beach. There are several different places to launch along the river, with plenty of varied landscape to take in on route. Salt marshes, wildlife and blue lagoons are all features of this gorgeous river, making it one of the best places for stand up paddle boarding in Cornwall.
