Meet the Wednesday Ocean Waders, Torquay’s friendlies ocean swim group
Every week, a community of ocean lovers gathers for a refreshing dip and the warmth of good company. What started as two friends has grown into the Wednesday Ocean Waders - known by friends as WOW - a welcoming, ever-expanding group that finds joy, resilience, and connection in the cold water. We asked the WOW crew to tell us more…
How did WOW begin?
WOW started after Jesse, and I attended a one-day Wim Hof course in Melbourne. We were blown away by how incredible we felt afterward and wanted to find like-minded people to join us for ocean dips in winter. Then in May 2021, amidst the isolation of Covid, WOW was born. When the long lockdowns followed, we kept meeting, realising just how many people were craving social connection.
How often do you meet for a dip or swim?
We post our dip and swim times each week, depending on factors like light and sunrise. While we schedule times every day, we don’t always go daily. Anyone is welcome to come and get involved.
What would you recommend for someone first getting involved in cold water and the ocean?
When it comes to cold water swimming, it’s best to start when the ocean is a little warmer, allowing your body to ease into it. The key is to listen to your body, never go in alone, and, if possible, be familiar with the Wim Hof method. Personally, I avoid hot showers afterward, as they tend to make me shiver all day. Instead, I bundle up in one of Red’s warm changing robes, grab a hot drink, and let my body warm up naturally. We often bring a flask of warm water to pour over our feet—and you’ll frequently spot us hugging hot water bottles!
Can anyone come and get involved?
Yes! Our group is welcome to everyone. We tend to meet at either the Salty Dog or Cosy Corner. Check out when and where we’re swimming on Facebook.
