Outdoorsy Mums Who Inspire: One Mother’s Everyday Adventures

Written by Lydia Burdett /

This Mother’s Day, we’re shining a light on Tasha- an outdoorsy mum, photographer, and ocean lover who’s found her rhythm in the flow of family life and the pull of the sea. From daily beach walks to an unforgettable 25,000 km road trip around Australia, her story is a reminder that adventure can be part of everyday family life when you say “yes” to the moments that matter.

Hi, I'm Tasha. I'm based in Sydney, Australia and a mum to an adventurous 7-year-old and wife to an even more adventurous husband—they are both the biggest "yes" people I know, so you could say the craving for adventure runs in the family. Last year as a family we completed a 25,000 km road trip around the coastline of Australia over 8 incredible months, making memories we will never forget.

My love for the great outdoors and the water started when I was a kid. I grew up near the coast in Cornwall in the UK, and some of my earliest memories are of jumping in the waves, climbing over rocks looking for sea glass, and learning to sail. That connection to the water has always been grounding for me; it has always been my happy place.

As a family, we have a deep and lifelong love for the outdoors, especially the ocean. Our son has always been drawn to the water even as a baby, he would watch my husband - Max surf, and crawl straight towards it, desperate to get in. These days, he loves to swim, surf, sail, snorkel and paddle board - we are so proud of him.

My life is a beautiful blend of my photography work, beach days, ferrying my son around to his after-school activities, snack-making marathons, bedtime stories, spontaneous family dance parties in the kitchen and chasing adventure wherever we can find it.

Water Adventures with Family

Our family is happiest outdoors, especially on the coast.  Whether it’s paddleboarding around the harbour or jumping off our boat on summer afternoons in Pittwater, those are the moments that fill our cups and our photo albums!

One of my favourite memories from our lap of Australia in the campervan was snorkelling at Ningaloo Reef. We saw a huge turtle, and watching my son's face as it swam past us is something I’ll never forget. Seeing those wonders through his eyes is incredibly special. That beautiful day ended with my son and husband surfing together until the sun dipped below the horizon. There was this quiet, magical stillness that felt like the world was pressing pause just for us. Moments like those, free from screens and schedules, remind me what really matters - being present!

Balancing Motherhood and Personal Adventure

Motherhood and adventure aren’t opposites - I believe they fuel each other. The more I take time to fill my own cup through little micro-adventures, like a morning paddleboard, the more grounded and present I am for my son. My son also constantly wants to be outside and even when he was little, being outside seemed to be his happy place too.

It’s not always easy; there are those seasons where the balance shifts, but I’ve learned to carve out small adventures in everyday life. A quick solo swim. A quick walk on the beach at sunset. A spontaneous family weekend road trip.

Our road trip around Australia taught me that I’m more resilient and adaptable than I ever imagined, and I am glad my son saw that. I want him to grow up knowing that it’s okay to chase these dreams and sometimes it's not easy, and that's ok too.  Our adventures build his resilience too, they remind him just how capable he is and how much he can achieve.

Gear & Preparation

Good gear makes all the difference, especially with a child in tow. We rely on dry bags (for snacks, spare clothes, and the inevitable soggy clothes) and love Red Equipment’s waterproof backpack and tote bag, they’re on constant rotation in our daily lives.

A hiking baby carrier was a game-changer when Finn was little. He joined us for so many hiking adventures and loved every second.

Having the right gear helps us say “yes” more often. It’s not about having the fanciest kit, it’s about having gear that lets us focus on the moment instead of the logistics, as the last thing you need is important kit breaking at the crucial moment.

Final Thoughts

To other mums craving adventure with their little ones: start small, stay curious, and don’t wait for everything to be perfect. Adventure doesn’t have to be big or Insta-worthy - it just has to be yours. Whether it’s camping in the backyard, taking a sunrise beach walk with your kids, or selling everything for a lap of Australia in a campervan like we did, each little adventure builds on the last. Before you know it, adventure becomes part of your everyday life.

Mother’s Day, for me, is a beautiful reminder of all the roles we juggle as mums, and a chance to honour not just the care we give, but the dreams we hold and the example we set for our kids.  It’s a celebration of who we are in full: mothers, women, adventurers, and everything in between.
