Red x Surfing WA: Celebrating the Spirit of Longboarding at the 2025 Whalebone Classic

Written by Lydia Burdett /

Cottesloe Beach turned it on for the 26th Whalebone Longboard Classic – and Red was stoked to be there. With clean lines, light offshore winds, and the kind of mellow energy only a longboarding event can deliver, Isolated Reef hosted a three-day celebration of tradition, talent, and surfing style.

As proud partners of Surfing WA, we were there throughout the comp: catching heats, chatting to competitors, showcasing our latest gear, and soaking in the atmosphere of one of WA’s most iconic surf events. And with divisions spanning grommets to grand legends, it was clear: the longboarding spirit is alive and well in Cottesloe.

A Classic in Every Sense

Inspired by a whale-rib found in the break back in 1998, the Whalebone Longboard Classic has always been about more than just scores – and this year’s edition was no different. More than 120 surfers took part, aged from 11 to 77, across 15 divisions. Finals day delivered arguably the best conditions seen in years at Iso’s: shoulder-high, glassy perfection that invited both power turns and classic nose rides.

In the standout Open Women’s final, Perth’s Georgia Young added yet another chapter to her Whalebone legacy – claiming a record-breaking ninth title, plus victory in the Open Women’s Logger. With the entire field scoring high, her last-minute 8.40 ride was enough to edge ahead of current State Champion Maddie Barrett in what many called the strongest women’s field in years.

On the men’s side, Jack Medland once again proved his dominance – not only defending his Open Men’s title, but also taking the Old Mal division with a throwback performance on a pre-’67 log. His final Open heat score of 17.10 was the highest of the entire event.

Not to be outdone, Evan Ledger put in a performance that was all style and flair – winning both the Open Men’s Logger and Nose Rider categories. “The waves were so good, and I was just out there surfing with some of my closest mates, it doesn’t get better than that,” he said. “We were chatting the whole final, just having a laugh. That’s the best kind of surfing.”

The younger and older generations were also out in force. Eleven-year-old Jarrah Trew made waves in his first ever longboard comp by winning the Under-18s, while Steve Becker finally broke through after 15 years of trying to claim the Over-65 title. A true celebration of surfing across generations – and exactly what the Whalebone Classic is all about.

Red to the Bone

Throughout the weekend, Red Equipment was there at Isolated Reef with a selection of surf-ready gear: Waterproof Changing Robes, Kit Bags, Poncho Towels, and Tote Bags – all designed to help surfers stay warm, dry, and comfortable on the beach.

Whether competitors needed to change quickly in the car park, stash their gear, or throw on a dry layer between heats, we had something to help. We loved chatting with locals, learning how they use Red gear in their own surf routines, and seeing our kit being used in its natural environment: by the water.
