In the first of this week’s blog takeover pieces, Great British Olympic Athlete and World Champion swimmer Dan Wallace of Swimmr reveals how to find the perfect open water swim spot…
There’s something special about open water swimming. The fresh air, the feeling of total freedom, and the way the water moves beneath you – it’s an experience like no other. But where you swim can make all the difference between an unforgettable swim and a tough, uncomfortable session. Over the years, I’ve swum in everything from glassy Scottish lochs to unpredictable coastal waters, and I’ve learnt that picking the right spot is key. So, whether you’re new to open water or looking for your next adventure, here’s how to find the perfect swim location.
Some of my best swims have been in wild locations – hidden lakes, remote beaches, or quiet rivers that feel untouched. There’s something about diving into nature that makes you feel truly alive. But while wild swimming has its magic, it also requires careful planning – knowing the water conditions, checking for safe entry and exit points, and always being aware of potential risks.
If you’re used to a more structured environment, open water venues are a fantastic alternative. Managed locations often have lifeguards, marked swim courses, and even warm showers for post-swim recovery (always a bonus in colder months!) They’re also great for those just getting into open water swimming, as you can build confidence in a safe setting before venturing into the wild.
So, what makes an ideal swim location? Here are a few things I always consider:
Water Conditions
Some locations are calm and crystal-clear, while others can have fast-moving currents, strong tides, or even hidden obstacles. Always check conditions before heading out.
Temperature
If you’re not used to colder water, start with locations that are a little more sheltered. Even in summer, deep lochs and lakes can be shockingly cold!
Accessibility & Exit Points
A dream swim spot is no good if you struggle to get in and out safely. Look for gradual entry points and always have an exit plan.
Local Knowledge
I can’t tell you how many times a local tip-off has led me to an unreal swim spot. Whether it’s a swim group on social media or a friend who knows the area well, tapping into local knowledge is a game-changer.
Safety First
No matter how good a swimmer you are, never underestimate open water. Swim with a buddy, use a brightly coloured tow float, and always let someone know where you’re going.
Whether you're diving into an inland river, taking on the rolling surf, or easing into a swim at a calm, patrolled waterway, the key is to find a place where you feel comfortable, confident, and stoked to dive in.
So, where’s your next swim spot going to be?
Happy Swimming,
