Meet the Clovelly Crustoceans: Sydney’s Friendly Swim Community

Every Friday morning, a growing crew of water people meets at Gordon’s Bay for a swim, a laugh, and a post-dip coffee. What started as four mates committing to get in the water has evolved into a thriving, all-inclusive swim community. We asked the Clovelly Crustoceans to tell us more…

How did the Crustoceans swim group start and evolve?

It all began at Tuesday night trivia – four mates who weren’t the strongest swimmers but wanted to hang out more and get into the ocean. After a few winter beverages at the Coach & Horses, we committed to Friday morning swims at Clovelly. Friends, then friends of friends started joining, and we soon moved to Gordon’s Bay, where we now swim a lap of the bay (with a cheeky detour to the bombie). What started as four has grown into a community of hundreds – but at its core, we’re still just mates who love the ocean.

Why the name?

After much overthinking and undersea brainstorming, we landed on the punny, alliterative Clovelly Crustoceans.

What are the physical and mental health benefits of swimming as a group?

The post-swim buzz says it all! Beyond the physical benefits, the weekly catch-up adds a sense of accountability, connection, and joy. Starting your day with a swim, a laugh, and good company sets the tone, no matter what’s ahead – the coffee after also helps.

Best advice for getting into ocean swimming?

Respect the ocean and you’ll reap the rewards – whether it’s a quick dip or a few k’s around the coast. The transition from pool to ocean can feel daunting, so join a swim group (there are plenty out there) and just get wet. The ocean swim community is welcoming, and learning from experienced swimmers makes all the difference.

Best advice for setting and pursuing goals?

Be ambitious, talk about your goals – you never know where the best advice will come from. You can’t complete a challenge without starting it, so just give it a crack.

How can people get involved?

We swim every Friday morning – rain, hail, or shine – at Gordon’s Bay, Clovelly. All are welcome!
