Surf season doesn’t stop when winter rolls around, and in fact, for a lot of pros, it's the best time of the year for it. There are smaller crowds, powerful waves, and crisp wind, all of which add up to an awesome surfing experience. If you need help deciding what to wear surfing in winter, then you’re in the right place.
Comfort and safety in the water are key, and that all starts with a proper winter wetsuit to surf in. The colder water means that you’ll want to ensure your wetsuit has an appropriate thickness, using 4/3mm or 5/4mm neoprene. This will provide greater insulation for the chillier weather. As an added tip, always try on a wetsuit before buying it. You need to ensure that you’ve got a snug fit to strike a good balance between proper insulation and mobility.
Building on what to wear surfing in winter, booties and gloves and vital accessories in some of the colder areas on the coast. Cold hands and feet are a proper session killer, and making sure you’ve got them covered with proper neoprene booties and gloves will keep you in the game much longer. 3-5mm neoprene booties and 2-3mm neoprene gloves should be ideal for the vast majority of temperatures you’d expect to face this winter.
A waterproof backpack for when you’re adventuring on the coast is a no-brainer, and you can’t do better than an Adventure Waterproof Backpack from Red. At a generous 30L capacity, these backpacks have more than enough storage space for all of your winter surfing gear, but it gets even better. By making use of immensely durable and water-resistant Armour Tech fabric and incorporating welded seams into the design, the Adventure backpack is fully waterproof, meaning that all of your gear and valuables are kept safe from water damage.
Rated at 8k waterproof / 15k breathable, you need to look no further than the Red EVO Pro changing robe when you’re looking for what to wear surfing in winter.
